Fall 2020: Remote Instruction for all FYS courses

Dear valued FYS instructor,

This Fall, virtually all First Year Seminars (FYS) will be offered remotely. We strongly encourage our instructors to schedule live (e.g., synchronous) sessions with enrolled students to provide regular, real time contact to foster and maximize community and active, discussion based learning.  These actions will help FYS meet one of our primary goals of developing close faculty and peer interaction within a small classroom environment.

There will still be good reasons to record class sessions (e.g., asynchronously) for students in different times zones or allowed absences, for example, and our preference for real time class delivery by no means precludes such important considerations for students.

We thank you for your proposal, and look forward to receiving an update on the times when you would like to schedule your class meetings for Fall, if you have not done so, in order for us to move ahead with listing the approved seminar.

Best Wishes,

Eddy Ruiz
