Attend a Seminar

Students launching rockets during First-Year Seminar

First-Year Seminars are designed to promote intellectual exchange, critical thinking, and community.   Built around hundreds of unique topics, seminars invite students to match their interests and passions with those of their instructors and fellow students.

Each seminar is limited to 19 students, so you'll have a chance to speak up and get to know your instructor and fellow students. Courses are 1 or 2 units, and may be letter graded or Pass/No Pass.

How many credits are classes worth and how will I be graded?

Seminars are worth one or two units, and meet one or two hours per week. Grading is either traditional letter or pass/no pass, depending on the course.

How many seminars can I take?

There's no limit; however, credit is only given for one seminar per quarter.

How do I choose? How do I register?

Explore the Seminar Schedules below to find the seminar(s) you are interested in. Copy the 5-digit CRN then register for the seminar as you would any other course via SISWEB.

I'm at Orientation, and all the Seminars I want are full.  What's going on?

Don't despair! We open up a few seats during each Orientation session to give students an equal opportunity to register.  And we roll out new seminars throughout the summer. So check back during Pass 2 - there may be spots in the class you want, or there may be another class you're just as excited about!

I'm not a first-year student.  Can I still take a seminar?

Yes. After second pass appointments, students with more than 45 units may be added at the discretion of the instructor if any of the 19 seats available in the seminar remain unfilled.

Incoming transfer students, please see the next question.

I'm a first-year transfer student. Can I register during Pass One?

Yes! Please send your student ID number and the CRN for the course you want to, and we'll send you a Permission-to-Add (PTA) number.

Do First-Year Seminars count toward GE or major requirements?

I really want to take a seminar but it is listed as full. Can I get added?

No. Classes are limited to 19 students. There are no exceptions to the rule.

I am trying to add the course. I'm getting an error that it is a "Duplicate". Am I doing something wrong? Do I need to wait to use the PTA number?

If you are on the wait list you must drop the class before using the PTA number. If the drop deadline has already passed, you will need to wait a few days until the add deadline has passed and the waitlists are gone.

Are there first-year seminars during the summer?

Yes! We are offering seminars this summer.
